Oral History Initiative
Our Oral History Initiative supports the process of interviewing Assyrians to encourage interviewees to construct a life narrative that enables them to contribute to the collective Assyrian memory, Assyrian identity, while preserving their voices for the historical record.


The Yonkers Public Library Assyrian Community Oral History
Goals of the Project:

Preserve the cultural history of Assyrian-Americans.

Inform people of the traditions and history of Assyrians.

Inform people of the Assyrian-American community in Yonkers.

Make people aware of the Assyrian Genocide.

Build a relationship between the Assyrian-American community and the library.

Archive these interviews with the Yonkers Public Library, the Assyrian Studies Association, and the Library of Congress.Make these interviews available to scholars, researchers, students, and to the public for educational purposes.​

​​Michael Walsh, librarian at the Yonkers Public Library and Ruth Kambar, PhD, representative of the Assyrian Studies Association, oral historian, and archivist of the Assyrian American Diaspora conducted a series of Assyrian American oral history interviews. Prior to these interviews, Ruth Kambar created a series of questions for the Assyrian Studies Association to guide each session, see below:
